Phillies vs. Braves Game Capsule: Jesús Luzardo’s Edge in NL East Clash

Tonight, June 28, 2025, at Truist Park, the Philadelphia Phillies (48-34) aim for a second straight victory over the Atlanta Braves (37-44) in a critical NL East showdown, following a 13-0 rout on Friday. Left-hander Jesús Luzardo (7-3, 4.08 ERA) takes the mound for the Phillies, facing Atlanta’s Spencer Schwellenbach (6-4, 3.21 ERA). After a dismal sweep by Houston where they scored just one run, the Phillies’ bats erupted yesterday, powered by Trea Turner’s two homers and Nick Castellanos’ 445-foot blast. Luzardo, acquired from Miami in December 2024, is poised to dominate Atlanta’s top-heavy lineup, leveraging his elite stuff and favorable matchups to secure a Phillies win.

Luzardo, 27, brings a high-octane arsenal with a mid-90s fastball, sharp slider, and deceptive changeup, generating a 28.7% strikeout rate from 2022-23. Despite a 2024 lumbar injury, he’s fully recovered, touching 98 mph in 2025 starts. His 104 strikeouts in 99.1 innings this season, including a 10-K gem against Milwaukee (May 31), showcase his swing-and-miss prowess. Against Atlanta, Luzardo is 3-3 with a 4.29 ERA in seven starts, but his recent form—allowing two or fewer earned runs in nine of 16 starts—signals dominance. A June 22 scoreless outing (6.2 IP, 7 K’s vs. Mets) highlights his ability to stifle potent lineups, with X posts praising his command and pitch mix (

Atlanta’s offense, led by Matt Olson (.257, 15 HR) and Marcell Ozuna (.378 OBP), ranks 23rd in runs per game (4.2) and strikes out 8.5 times per game (17th in MLB). Left-handed batters have especially struggled, which is a concern for Olson. Austin Riley (.269 BA) and Ozuna fare better against lefties, but Luzardo’s slider (42.1% hard-hit rate) neutralizes right-handed power. Atlanta’s 30-16 record when recording eight-plus hits drops off against pitchers like Luzardo, who limits hard contact (89.9 avg exit velocity).

The Phillies, with a .254 team BA (7th in MLB) and 83 homers (16th), are clicking, with Turner (12-for-43, 3 HR last 10 games) and Kyle Schwarber (25 HR) primed to exploit Schwellenbach’s 0.99 WHIP. Philadelphia’s 32-5 record when scoring five-plus runs underscores their edge after Friday’s outburst. Luzardo’s ability to pitch deep (six-plus innings in nine 2025 starts) preserves an improving bullpen (4.63 ERA). With Atlanta on a 2-game skid and Philly hungry to bury their 1-run Houston nightmare, Luzardo’s strikeout stuff and the Phillies’ offensive surge should overwhelm the Braves, clinching a 6-2 win.

T.M. Selection: Nats/Angels OVER (FREE PLAY)

Washington won the opener by a score of 15-9 yesterday and I’m anticipating another slug-fest here as well with two shaky starting pitchers squaring off. The Nationals go with Mike Soroka, who is 3-5 with a 5.06 ERA, and the home side counters with Kyle Hendricks, who is 5-6 with a 4.83 ERA. I don’t trust either of these guys right now and because of that, I’ll recommend a second look at the over!

T.M. Prediction: 8-6 LA.
